CAW Local 200 Computers for Kids is the result of one man’s dream. John McCloskey saw 100’s of computers going to the landfill, only to be destroyed. Some of them, he thought could be refurbished and put into the hands of children throughout our community. He knew of children who were falling behind in school because they lacked access to much needed computer technology. It was a something that needed to be done. But….

After graduating from the CAW Paid Education Leave program in Port Elgin, Ontario, John knew exactly what he wanted to do. In January 2004, he approached CAW Local 200 leadership with plan to make a tangible contribution to our community through the reuse of ‘Trashed Technology’. Armed with encouragement and support, John then approached the Chairpersons of Local 200 Education, Environment & Youth committees to discuss making this ‘dream’ a reality.

This newly formed group of Local 200 volunteers began searching for a shop to repair the anticipated computer donations. Once a home was found, volunteer’s built repair benches while others sought out our first computer donations to build stock for setting-up the first community drop-in centre.

Well, as things can sometimes go, everything came together in the reverse order. With the help from the in-plant union leadership of the Windsor Aluminum Plant, a community partner was found that would house the first "Computers for Kids" drop-in centre. It was decided that the St. Joseph community group on Windsor’s West side, would open for the first day of March Break, just 2 ½ weeks away. When asked why this date was selected, Rob McLean stated that these kids weren’t likely to be going to Florida for their Spring Break.

It should be noted that the Bloomfield/St. Joseph community organization offered the use of a townhouse basement, which was in a very neglected state and would require a major upgrade. Needless to say, the next couple of weeks were a beehive of activity. The leadership of John’s plant joined his numerous friends, who contributed many hundreds of volunteer hours to ensure that the children would not be disappointed.

As our shop was being completed, the first shipment of computer equipment arrived from our good friends at Green Shield. Their castoffs were destined to open the door to new learning and social opportunities for local children.

CAW Local 200 Computers for Kids was about to make its debut in Essex County.

As of our 3rd annniversary, Computers for Kids has partnered with over 30 other community organizations to bring over 35 programs to Windsor and Essex County. We have also provide almost 500 special needs children with computers for in their homes.
