(Windsor) - The Hon. Dwight Duncan (MPP, Windsor-Tecumseh), Hon. Sandra Pupatello(MPP, Windsor-West), and Bruce Crozier (MPP, Essex) are thrilled to have the opportunity to draw attention to a wonderful program in operation in Windsor-Essex County.
Computers for Kids is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization that provides free computers to disadvantaged youth in the community. Since the centre first opened in March of 2004, CAW Local 200 Computers for Kids has partnered with other community organizations to open 28 after-school & summer programs, and in addition, almost 350 computers have been placed with special needs students.
“This organization has been instrumental in providing the youth in our community with the resources they need to succeed in school”, says Pupatello. “With computers and other technological devices becoming essential learning tools, Computers for Kids has recognized a need in our city and has stepped in to fill it”
Because of this program, it is estimated that over 1000 underprivileged youth now have access to computers; a much-needed education tool.
“This is an excellent community-based program,” said Duncan. “Anyone who may have received a new computer as a gift for Christmas should consider donating their old one to this program. It’s a great way to help out local youth.”
"Computers for Kids is really about the future, because our future will soon be in the hands, and minds, of our youth. Every young person must be given the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential and this program is a great assistance to that end. Congratulations to the volunteers, and the kids, who continue to make Computers for Kids a success," said Crozier.
“This program is a glowing example of what can be done when organized labour, government, private business, and community work together for the betterment of our youth,” said John McCloskey, President of Computers for Kids. “Not only have we established after school programs for underprivileged students we are recycling almost 45,000 kilograms of electronic waste, protecting our air, water and soil from hazardous materials.”
The volunteers for Computers for Kids refurbish used and old computers. When you upgrade your systems, know that there can be a second life for your computer. For more information, contact Computers for Kids at 519-253-KIDS (5437).
